1862 Indian Princess Large Head Gold Dollar - NGC MS-61
Offered here is an authentic 1862 Indian Princess Head Gold Dollar, struck at the Philadelphia Mint and certified by NGC as MS-61.
The 1862 Gold Dollar belongs to the Type 3 Indian Princess Head series, distinguished by the larger and more refined portrait of Liberty introduced in 1856. Designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the obverse depicts Liberty wearing a Native American-inspired feathered headdress, while the reverse features the denomination and date surrounded by an agricultural wreath.
The 1862 issue had an original mintage of 1,361,390 coins. As a small gold denomination produced during the Civil War era, surviving Mint State examples offer collectors an interesting combination of historic significance, classic U.S. coinage design, and precious metal content.
Graded MS-61 by NGC, this example is certified as an uncirculated Mint State coin with no wear from circulation.
