1827 Capped Bust Half Dollar - NGC AU Details - Harshly Cleaned

Offered here is an authentic 1827 Capped Bust Half Dollar, struck at the Philadelphia Mint and certified by NGC as AU Details, Harshly Cleaned.

The 1827 Capped Bust Half Dollar is a classic early-U.S. silver issue from the long-running Capped Bust series of 1807–1839. These half dollars were the principal silver workhorse of American commerce in the 1820s and remain one of the most actively collected early federal denominations.

The 1827 date had a mintage of 5,493,400 coins, one of the higher totals of the lettered-edge Capped Bust half dollar series. The date includes several collectible varieties, among them the Square Base 2, Curl Base 2, and 1827/6 overdate. Please review the NGC label and photographs for the exact variety attributed to this piece.

The obverse features John Reich’s Capped Bust portrait of Liberty facing left, wearing a cap inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen stars surround the bust, and the date 1827 appears below.

The reverse features Reich’s heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast, an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other. A ribbon above the eagle bears the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the design, with the denomination 50 C. below.

The coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and bears no mintmark.

Struck in 89.24% silver and 10.76% copper, the coin has a standard weight of 13.48 grams and a lettered edge reading FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR.

Certified AU Details by NGC, this example shows About Uncirculated detail but has been net-graded Details rather than assigned a numeric AU grade because of harsh cleaning. Cleaning is a surface impairment that prevents a straight numeric grade; the remaining detail should be judged from the photographs and the NGC label.
