1878-CC Morgan Silver Dollar — NGC MS-63 GSA Soft Pack
A historic 1878-CC Morgan Silver Dollar, certified NGC MS-63 and preserved in its original GSA Soft Pack.
Struck at the Carson City Mint in 1878, this dollar represents the first year of the Morgan Dollar series and one of the earliest Carson City issues of the iconic design. The 1878-CC had a relatively low mintage of 2,212,000 pieces, and examples with original GSA packaging remain highly sought after by collectors of Morgan Dollars and Carson City coinage.
The coin contains 90% silver, weighs approximately 26.73 grams, and contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver. The obverse features George T. Morgan's classic portrait of Liberty, while the reverse depicts the heraldic eagle holding arrows and an olive branch.
GSA Soft Pack Provenance
The General Services Administration (GSA) distributed millions of previously stored U.S. silver dollars during government sales beginning in the 1970s. The 1878-CC was among the Carson City dollars offered through these sales, including a specifically documented group of 13,526 1878-CC dollars in the 1973 soft-pack sale.
The original GSA packaging provides an important element of provenance. NGC has specifically recognized and certified Morgan Dollars that remain in their original GSA soft-pack format, and collectors have developed a strong market for these preserved examples.
