The 2021 American Silver Eagle represents one of the most significant transition years in the history of the series. During 2021, the U.S. Mint retired the original Heraldic Eagle reverse used since 1986 and introduced the new Eagle Landing reverse, creating the collectible Type 1 and Type 2 Silver Eagle issues.

This example is the Type 1 Reverse Proof issue, featuring the original Heraldic Eagle reverse and a distinctive reverse proof finish. Unlike a traditional proof coin with mirrored fields and frosted design elements, a reverse proof features frosted fields contrasted by mirror-like design elements.

The coin was originally issued as part of the 2021 American Eagle One Ounce Silver Reverse Proof Two-Coin Set Designer Edition. The set paired this Type 1 Reverse Proof Silver Eagle struck at West Point with a Type 2 Reverse Proof Silver Eagle struck at San Francisco. The U.S. Mint limited the product to 125,000 sets.

The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman's celebrated Walking Liberty design, originally introduced on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar in 1916. Liberty is depicted walking toward the rising sun while carrying branches of laurel and oak.

The Type 1 reverse features John Mercanti's classic Heraldic Eagle design, depicting an eagle behind a shield with an olive branch and arrows in its talons and thirteen stars positioned above. The 2021 Type 1 represents the final year of this classic reverse design.

The coin was struck at the West Point Mint and bears the distinctive "W" mintmark.
