1850-D $2.50 Liberty Head Gold Quarter Eagle — Dahlonega Mint
A scarce and historic 1850-D Liberty Head Quarter Eagle, struck at the legendary Dahlonega Mint in Georgia during the height of the American gold-mining era.
With a remarkably low mintage of just 12,148 coins, the 1850-D is one of the more desirable early Dahlonega gold issues. Most surviving examples are found in circulated grades, and attractive, original examples are particularly sought after by collectors of Southern gold.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features a classic portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet, surrounded by 13 stars, with the date below. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle holding arrows and an olive branch, with the “D” mintmark beneath the eagle identifying the historic Dahlonega Mint.
Struck in 90% gold, this $2.50 Quarter Eagle contains approximately 0.121 troy ounces of pure gold. Beyond its intrinsic gold value, the coin carries significant numismatic appeal because of its low mintage, Dahlonega origin, and place in the history of American gold coinage.
